Learn how to make cake pops the easy way with cake mix with these easy step by step instructions with photos!

Today I am showing you how to make Cake Pops using cake mix. These little nuggets of cake dipped in chocolate have become a huge trend.

Charles says that he likes them because you can have just a taste of dessert without committing to eat an entire piece of cake or a cupcake. (My opinion? Life is short, eat a whole piece of cake!)

Cake pops are prepared by baking a cake, mashing it up, mixing in frosting, rolling it into a balls, putting it on a stick, and dipping it in chocolate. The flavor combinations are endless, and you can decorate them with colored sprinkles or dunk them in colored white chocolate to match any party theme or color scheme.

It’s easier to just make a cake, but I do appreciate how adorable these are. Oxygen not included - spaced out download free download.

I can understand why cake pop have become a huge trend – they are really pretty!

You can use any boxed cake mix to perpare this recipe. If you really want to keep things simple, you could buy a couple cupcakes at the grocery store and then mash them up frosting and all to make cake pops.

First, you need to bake a cake. Then you take that cake and break it up and add some frosting. I used a store-bought chocolate cake mix. If you want to bake a cake from scratch, you might want to try my friend Jocelyn’s chocolate cake recipe.

Mix the frosting into the cake, mashing the cake up at the same time. You will end up with soft cake that can be easily formed into balls.

Roll the cake into balls, you want them to be about the size of a ping pong ball. Then dip the sticks in melted chocolate and place them in the cake balls.

Then the cake balls go into the freezer until they become solid. This is very important. You need to put the cake pops in the freezer before you dip them in the melted chocolate, otherwise, they will fall apart and make a mess. Trust me on this one.

Then it is time to dunk the cake balls in melted chocolate and sprinkles. Voilà! You have Cake Pops!

I might have made that seem a little too easy, the process is a little tedious.

I loved how these cake pops turned out. You can really taste the caramel frosting, and I liked the way the nonpareils gave added crunch.

I used the cake mix to bake two 8-inch round cakes. Then I used about 1/4 of that cake to make Cake Pops (I didn’t want to make too many because I knew I would end up eating all of them).

The instructions below are for a full batch, which would yield about 60 cake pops.

Pro Tip: Save the cake mix box and use it to stick the cake pops into while the chocolate dies. Or if you want to be fancy, cake pop stands exist.

Ingredients

  • 1box of Cake Mix
  • All the ingredients called for on the box of cake mix
  • 1carton of Frosting
  • Sticks for the Cake PopsTarget and Michaels both sell them
  • about 2 1/4 cups Melting Chocolate or Almond Bark
  • Nonpareils or Sprinkles

Instructions

  1. Start by preparing a cake using the cake mix and following the instructions on the box. Bake the cake and let it cool. Save the box from the cake mix - you will need this later
  2. In a large bowl, combine the cake and the frosting. I recommend gradually adding the frosting until the cake pops are moist and easy to form into balls.

  3. Stir until small crumbs form.

  4. Then form the crumbs into small balls.
  5. Next, melt about 1/4 cup of the almond bark. Dip the sticks in the melted chocolate and then stick them in the cake balls, being careful not to go through the balls.
  6. This is the most important step: freeze the cake balls. You need to freeze the cake balls, otherwise, they will break up when you dip them in the melted chocolate. Freeze the cake balls for at least 2 hours. I left them in the freezer for two days because I got busy with other things.
  7. Before you melt the chocolate, take the box from the cake mix and use a knife to gently poke small holes in the box. You will be placing the cake pops in the holes while the chocolate dries.
  8. Melt about 2 cups of melting chocolate or almond bark. It works well to melt it in a mug placed in the microwave.
  9. One by one, dunk the cake pops in the melted chocolate, shake off the excess, and sprinkle with nonpareils.

  10. Carefully place the cake pops in the box to dry. Once the chocolate sets it is time to eat!

So…what’s a BakePop? It’s a Cake Pop Baking pan!

I am sure you’ve all heard about the newest sensation in the baking world, cake pops.

If you haven’t, then clearly, you’ve been living under a rock. With no television. Or internet. Or human contact.

I’ve made cake pops by hand a few times, but when I heard about the new BakePops pan, I was all kinds of excited.

We’re talking a Cake Pop baking pan, people!

My daughter and I were feeling lazy and decided to use the Bake Pop pan to create Bake Pops but were weren’t going to decorate them; we just used them as an alternative to cupcakes. We used a a milk chocolate cake boxed mix and added an extra egg, substituted milk for the water that the recipe called for (1/2 of it) and added a small package of chocolate pudding…these are all tips that are included on the instructions that come with the Bake Pops for creating a denser, easier to decorate Bake Pop!

Using the Bake Pop cake pop baking pan is pretty easy. You simply pour the prepared batter over the bottom cavity (once you’ve sprayed it with a flour baking spray like Pam or Crisco) and spread it evenly using a spatula (or a pie cutter like I used). Now, according to Bake Pops, it’s okay for there to be an overage. I opted to scoop up the overage and put it back into my mixing bowl and used it for a second batch. No sense in wasting it!

Bella Cake Pop Instruction Manual

You bake the Bake Pops 20-30 minutes at 350 degrees and when they come out, you might find something like this!

I was certain that the Bake Pops would be ruined by looking at all of the batter that came out of the top of the Bake Pop Cake Pop Baking pan…but the tops popped off pretty easily and you know what? They were pretty good! I ate one as a test…and it tasted like a little cookie! We set them aside for snacking!

Once you remove the top layer of the Bake Pop cake pop baking pan, you will find that the batter made nice little balls, but there is a bit of a mess around them on the pan. Don’t worry about that, they are just fine! And since the Bake Pops pan is dishwasher safe, you can just throw it in the dishwasher when you’re done with it!

You just pop the little Bake Pop out of the cavity , making sure to remove the ring around the edges.

While I think that Bake Pops are a great little time saver, I think I will still make CakePops by hand when I am making them for a big event – like my sister’s Bridal Shower in February – because I am too anal to serve a cake pop with a ring around the entire treat…but for desserts at home and family functions, this Bake Pop pan is going to save me a ton of time!
